Process Engineer for Marine

Define and validate assembly strategy and process sequence in a powerful 3D context using the Process Engineer for Marine Role on the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform

The DELMIA 3DEXPERIENCE Process Engineer for Marine (PERFM) is the sister role of Assembly Structure Preparer for Marine (PASPM). With PERFM, the Process Engineer details the process plans for the various elements of the Manufacturing Items Structure, no matter the discipline (hull structure, outfitting, accommodation, etc).

This includes manufacturing operations (for assembly or fabrication), assigning operations to manufacturing items, process requirements, and allocation of resources and equipment (workers, cranes, tooling etc.) required for operations.

Operations are balanced amongst the available manufacturing systems. This refers to logical resources representing lines/stations, or logical localizations where operations take place in the physical shipyard or at an offshore site. At any time, using the 4DPlay (4D = 3D + Time) function, the Process Engineer is able to view the virtual build-up sequence of the product. 4DPlaying helps to ensure the plan is complete and offers the opportunity to solve potential issues in the build-up sequence.

Process Engineer for Marine Benefits

Engineer process plans for ship or offshore structures based on visual assignment and business rules

Process Engineer for Marine is an efficient 3D model-based transparent solution leveraging both powerful 3D visualization tools and alphanumerical information. It rapidly defines process plans with detailed operations and allocated resources. This helps to balance operations across manufacturing systems for large marine products. Business rules integration allows for system tailoring and automates the generation of the process plan/operation/manufacturing system, which is based on the manufacturing items structure objects and attributes as well as predefined templates for those structures.

Utilize the power of 3D to avoid errors in a collaborative approach with design engineers Transparency and automation are keys to enable collaboration through the unique language of 3D, and both will help reduce the number of errors that would otherwise be found in the production process. For example, assembly sequence issues (wrong operation order), over-utilization of particular resources, incorrect assignment of manufacturing items (parts), conflicts in the usage of important equipment (like heavy-weight cranes) at the same time, etc. This helps to accelerate business processes and decisions, avoid cycles between departments and results in a shortened ramp-up-to-production times.

Always up-to-date with a single source of truth

Because Process Engineer for Marine is based on the 3DEXPERIENCE® platform, governance business processes such as revision management, lifecycle management, issue management, document management, etc. are provided on the process engineering data. Some governance management roles and applications such as configuration management, change management, project management do require additional licensing.

Process Engineer for Marine Highlights

Process engineering and manufacturing system utilization for all marine and offshore manufacturing disciplines

Enables process engineers in hull structure, HVAC, piping, electrical, and all other shipbuilding disciplines to author process plans (e.g. plate and profile cutting, welding, assembly operations for outfitting and accommodation, etc.), allocate resources, and balance operations across manufacturing systems.

Unique PERFM 4D (3D + Time) immersive multi-view user interface

Provides various UI elements to perform the job consisting of thousands of objects. Among those elements are:

  • a grid view (3-dimensional PERT-like chart) to illustrate the process flow with 3D representations displayed on tiles
  • a classic tree view and a smart-tool auxiliary viewer with corresponding manufacturing items (parts) list with plenty of possibilities to visualize what is already planned versus what has not.

The auxiliary view in Process Engineer for Marine includes an integrated 4DPlayer function that displays the virtual build-up sequence of the product. 4DPlaying helps to ensure the plan is complete and solves potential issues in the build-up sequence.

Process Gantt Chart and Work Load Balancing (WLB) Chart

Maximize the utilization of manufacturing systems by balancing operations across systems. In Process Gantt and Work Load Balancing charts, visualize the duration of operations along with the sequence as determined by product flow and additional time constraints (start/start or end/end or end/start with delay, etc.) between operations. By changing operation durations or moving operations from one manufacturing system to another, Process Engineer for Marine automatically computes the utilization to help achieve desired cycle times within the limits of available resources.

Resource Utilization Gantt Chart and Resource Balancing Chart

Inspect the utilization of individual resources (e.g. workers, robots, machines, equipment, etc.) to identify bottlenecks quickly, such as the utilization of a heavy-duty crane that is lifting big parts.
Utilization optimization with automated line balancing (ALB)

Automatically balance operations among a given set of manufacturing systems based on operation duration and number of available systems.

Manufacturing Context Building (Session Building)

When dealing with large data sets in the Marine & Offshore industry, it is highly recommended that a proper manufacturing context with a reduced data set be prepared to avoid loading all data simultaneously. This mechanism is called session building, and is managed by the Manufacturing Context Builder (MCB), an application that is available in all authoring roles. MCB comes with powerful filtering (attribute, volume, configuration) and viewing functions as well as the ability to find objects linked to each other by various relationships – and loads the objects consistently into the authoring session. This concept is called Smart Completion. The customer can define recipes to combine filters, tree expansion, navigation and completion. This is called User-Defined completion or User-Defined Open, depending on where the completion is being performed (client side or server side).

The basis of other downstream manufacturing roles

Process Engineer for Marine is the basis for many other downstream manufacturing roles. Ones based directly on the process plan created by PERFM are:

  • The management and publication of work instructions for the shop floor and/or towards manufacturing execution systems (DELMIA Manufacturing Operations Management)
  • The simulation of assembly operations along with tracks (movement of manufacturing items along trajectories in space including collision detection)
  • The flow simulation /discrete event simulation of operations in the factory
Synchronization Manager

In order to identify modified items on the Manufacturing Item Structure, PERFM provides a powerful synchronization manager. This tool allows controlled mass updates as well as decision-making on how to handle modifications. The subsequent application of synchronization managers from PASPM and PERFM support the complete revision process from the Engineering Items Structure (Product Structure) down to the process plans with the ability to evaluate the impact of part revisions on the process plan in 4D.

Issue Management

This command allows reporting of issues against the objects managed in this role. The issues are stored in the platform and easily shareable with all other collaborators.
