What is digital manufacturing?

The use of computer systems in manufacturing services, supply chains, products, and processes is known as digital manufacturing.

To establish an integrated approach to manufacturing, from design to production and on to the servicing of the finished products, digital manufacturing technologies connect systems and processes across all sectors of production.

What is augmented reality?

Augmented reality (AR) technology allows for virtual objects to be seamlessly integrated into the actual world in 3D. The idea is to seamlessly integrate the actual and virtual worlds via digital technology.

A word frequently associated with science fiction films, augmented reality is now more prevalent in daily life and is progressively making its way into the business sphere.

How does Augmented Reality work?

Virtual information (texts, animations, graphics, 3D models, etc.) are added to the real world using augmented reality. In order to accomplish this, augmented reality incorporates this data in a variety of ways into the user’s environment.

For example, various components can be added to a video feed which can then be watched on a screen or tablet. The latter can then develop into a window onto the outside world with incorporated virtual information.

Another way in which this can be done it to display the information on lenses in the user’s vision or the information could be displayed directly on an item using a projector.

It’s important to know where this information is located and that it has been placed in the proper area. In order to ensure the location of the data, sensors could be deployed to monitor various elements. For example, colour cameras, depth sensors, inertial units and GPS devices could help with this.

Therefore, the methods of restitution, the methods of capture, and the way they localise themselves are what set apart augmented reality solutions.

How does digital manufacturing and AR effect the industrial world?

The fundamentals of how goods are created, scaled, and built are being quickly altered by digital manufacturing and AR. Utilising these technologies has the potential to seriously disrupt and fundamentally change the manufacturing industry.

In utilising digital manufacturing and AR, it is possible to do away with the requirement for manuals or other reference materials by enabling workers to view instructions and diagrams overlaid directly on the objects they are working on.

This would allow for a production process that is more streamlined, effective, and makes fewer mistakes. Also, as individuals will be able to complete tasks more rapidly and precisely, this would enable businesses to make goods more swiftly and inexpensively.

Digital manufacturing and AR in manufacturing serves two key purposes for businesses. Firstly, you may improve the product’s quality by eradicating production-related misunderstandings, enhancing employees’ credentials through AR training, and focusing efforts on innovation rather than only addressing logistical annoyances. Secondly, digital manufacturing and AR act as a means to speed up team productivity, cut down on repair expenses, and shorten the time it takes to develop a product.

This means that both companies as a whole and customer bases have the potential to feel the impact of adopting digital manufacturing and AR.

It’s a long-term investment that can increase customer and stakeholder trust as well as trust within your organisation. Digital manufacturing and AR boost manufacturing visibility and transparency, which in turn helps with product development and enhances reputation.
